This training is built for caring professionals working with youth experiencing mental health challenges and will focus especially on anxiety, depression, self-harm and substance use, misuse and abuse. The course will focus on teaching skills that help youth manage emotions and build resiliency. It will cover select skills including stress management and healthy relationships and will focus on skill areas covered in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT).

Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate confidence in identifying the following mental health conditions: depression, anxiety, self-harm and substance abuse and show understanding of the effects of trauma in all of the four conditions
- Be able to identify various attachment styles and the impact of the various styles
- Be able to identify co-morbid conditions
- Demonstrate the importance of supporting parents and carers when supporting younger people who experience mental health problems
- Apply motivational interviewing skills to young people experiencing mental health challenges and also to their families
- Demonstrate the function of emotions and how to not be overwhelmed by them
- Demonstrate strategies linked to managing emotions more effectively through better understanding of, and reducing the intensity of painful emotions, and reducing vulnerability to extreme emotions. (emotional regulation)
- Be able to support the individual experiencing mental health problems and their family to access self-care/self-management support if desired
- Practice strategies for encouraging individuals to recognise and take responsibility for their own behaviour

Entry Requirements
- Youth Mental Health First Aid;
- 3 plus years of experience working with children and young people;
- Reference by immediate manager confirming knowledge and skills regarding basics of child and adolescent development and knowledge and understanding around the mental health conditions of anxiety, depression, self-harm and substance abuse.
Or
Qualification (Level 5 or 6) in psychiatric nursing, psychology, psychotherapy.
Or
Qualification (Level 5 or 6) in Social work, youth studies, occupational therapy and Youth Mental Health First Aid.
